Nine deepening technological fields

The Hitachi Group has a history of product development over 100 years. To deliver the performance and reliability that customers require, the Research & Development Group has constantly made technological innovations. Our accumulated technology covers nine fields: Energy, Electronics, Machinery, Materials, Systems, Information & Communication, Control, Production and Healthcare. The Kokubunji Site leads research supporting Hitachi's business and creation of new innovation

The Kokubunji Site, surrounded by the greenery of Musashino, was established in 1942 on the basis of the idea of Hitachifs founding president Namihei Odaira:g Tackle todayfs issues together with carrying out research for targets 10 or 20 years hence.h Since then, it has developed three core technologies (measurement technology, electronics technology and computer technology) that start with transmission electron microscope, transistor research and computer research, and has contributed to the creation of Hitachi's large business such as energy, semiconductors, computers etc. Currently, we are actively working on open innovation as well, with the creation of new technologies such as digital technology (artificial intelligence, video/audio processing, data science, storage system, cloud etc.), electronics (connectivity, power device, signal processing, semiconductor, light application system etc.) and healthcare (medical systems, biometric measurement systems, etc.)

The Ibaraki Site supports social innovation, covering materials and key devices in social and living infrastructure.

The Ibaraki Site is the research establishment with the longest history of any in the R&D Group, having been established in 1934. It develops innovative technology to resolve issues on a global scale, such as climate change and exhaustion of resources, and is passionate about realizing a sustainable society.
Examples of the Ibaraki Sitefs research areas include energy fields such as atomic energy, wind power and solar energy; energy conservation, resource-saving and recycling technology for automobiles, railroad, construction machinery, elevators, airconditioning and consumer electronics equipment; and supporting batteries, motors, controls, robotics and new materials, etc. Researchers with specialist expertise in diverse fields combine their strengths to work on the creation of new technologies, from materials to systems, with the aim of successfully achieving big projects that are being carried out all over the world.

The Yokohama Site cooperates with research laboratories outside Japan to research IT and manufacturing technology to improve the added value of social innovation business combining both social infrastructure businesses such as transport, energy, finance and administration, etc., and information businesses such as storage systems, cloud and big data, etc. From manufacturing, embedded systems and IT platforms to systems and services, the site is focused on R&D that values synergy, making good use of ability to provide solutions that can be integrated.
With a basic policy of having a lively workplace staffed by young people through to veterans, this site closely cooperates with business divisions and quickly connects development technology to business.

Global Expansion

With structuring seven global research sites that includes Japan, we collaborate with overseas sites in the USA, Europe, and APAC(Asia-Pacific) to develop top technologies and global research rooted in the needs of each region with leadership of local staff. Through collaboration with Hitachi's overseas research sites and joint research activities with universities, research institutes and businesses throughout the world, we conduct R&D globally. As well as aiming to improve research by taking advantage of the characteristics of each location, we are striving to undertake R&D that supports overseas business by establishing a real-time understanding of the needs of each market and providing corresponding feedback.

Educational system of R&D group

We collaborate with internal and external educational institutions to provide necessary skills and education for career advancement. We also actively participate in academic societies etc. held overseas for the purpose of accumulating experience as the foundation of global development. There is also a system to back up those who wish to acquire a degree or improve their language skills.

Open laboratory

It was opened in 2016 as a place for Hitachi and customers to conduct real and speedy prototyping in collaboration with customers and seeking solutions with research and development together. There is also a shared space that everyone can use, and it is utilized as a communication space for meetings or to have refreshment in-house.
