Hitachi Ltd., has developed a new groupware product that provides a full set of groupware functions. Users can use Web browsers to access the fucntions, which are based on Java and ActiveX technologies. In addition, the new product fully supports intranet applications with improved workflow functions. Such workflow functions are indispensable for improving the efficiency of corporate information systems. Marketing starts on November 1997 and shipment begins at the end of January 1998.As networking technology represented by the Internet becomes more widely spread, the attention of the business world is focusing on intranets (built with Internet technology) for corporate information systems. As a consequence, there is a need to standardize on Web browsers as the preferred groupware interface.
With this new product, users can use a Web browser to perform daily tasks such as processing forms. Because of Java technology, such users do not need to worry about underlying OS differences. The groupware also provides many additional functions usable from Web browsers: for example, functions for defining the workflow of business processes, functions for monitoring or analyzing business progress, etc. " Active Server Pages," one of the ActiveX-related technologies used in the workflow functions of the product, facilitate the construction of intranet-compatible workflow systems.
