BUSINESS ACTIVITIES BUSINESS ACTIVITIES

  • Nuclear Fusion and Accelerators Field

The nuclear fusion and accelerators field mainly designs and manufactures equipment for experimental devices for research and development of nuclear fusion and acceleration, which is promoted as a national project and contributes to the development of science towards sustainable society from the standpoint of MONOZUKURI and social implementation of these technologies.

  • Nuclear fusion experimental equipment

We are contributing to the promotion of the most advanced research by designing and manufacturing equipment for experimental devices such as ITER, an experimental reactor created through international cooperation, JT-60SA (currently National Institute for Quantum Science and Technology (QST)), and LHD (National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS)) for research and development of nuclear fusion, which has been researched as a strong candidate as a new energy source in the drive towards becoming carbon neutral and is attracting attention due to the formulation of the Fusion Energy Innovation Strategies by Cabinet Office, and by providing support for operation and maintenance. We are participating as a member of the design team in a technical study for the prototype reactor which is currently being considered in an all-Japan system, as well as considering cooperation with startups aiming for early power generation using private funding.

  • High energy physics research equipment

We are conducting research and development of particle accelerators and are contributing to the development of advanced science. In particular, we are participating in large-size accelerator projects (such as J-PARC(※) (JAEA, KEK), and Super-KEKB (KEK)) and researching and developing main equipment such as electromagnets and accelerating cavities. We are also involved in manufacturing superconducting magnets (KEK) for the High Luminosity LHC Upgrade of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

  • Contribution to science technology development through MONOZUKURI

We have been designing and manufacturing experimental equipment for research and development of nuclear fusion and accelerators under the guidance of research institutes and universities for over 50 years, since the early days of research in the 1950s based on our electrical equipment production technologies developed through the production of generators and transformers. Equipment that was initially the size of an experimental device in a laboratory has become comparable to a power plant in scale, and the fundamental technologies of electrical equipment production have developed into technologies such as superconductivity and cryogenic engineering, ultra-high voltage technology, ultra-high vacuum technology, and manufacturing technology for large structures. Additionally, we have been contributing to the development of this field as a home electric appliance manufacturer by combining these technologies with system technology.
We are also developing characteristic in-house technologies such as arbitrarily-shaped and high-precision magnetic field design and manufacturing technology, high-current ion source and beam transport technology, and high-temperature superconducting wire, which are required in this field, in cooperation with the Research & Development department. These technologies are also applied to magnetic resonance imaging equipment (MRI) and particle beam therapy (PBT) devices in the healthcare business field and are developing further.
Hitachi is achieving both progressiveness to realize the ideas of researchers who are our customers and reliability based on deep experience and is working with a mission to contribute to the development of science and social implementation of technology towards sustainable society from the standpoint of MONOZUKURI.
