Surrounded by the greenery of Musashino, the Kokubunji Site was established in 1942 by the founder, President Odaira, on the principle of “undertaking research with a focus on 10-20 years in the future, while also tackling the issues of today”. Since then, we have fused and developed the three core technologies of measurement (beginning with the transmission electron microscope in 1942), electronics (beginning with transistor research in 1952) and computing (beginning with computer research in 1956), thus creating Hitachi's large businesses in energy, semiconductors, computers, communications, etc. Moreover, we are still creating new technologies in the fields of information and communication, electronics, healthcare and measurement.

The Ibaraki Site supports social innovation, covering materials and key devices in social and living infrastructure.

Established in 1934, the Ibaraki Site has the longest history in the R&D group. We are eagerly developing innovative technologies to solve global issues such as climate change and resource depletion to achieve a sustainable society.
Typical fields of research include energy technologies such as nuclear power, wind power and solar power, energy saving, resource saving and recycling technologies for automobiles, railways, construction equipment, elevators, air-conditioners and home appliances, and the batteries, motors, controllers, robotics and new materials, etc. that support these technologies. To ensure the success of big projects currently in progress throughout the world, researchers possessing strengths in a variety of fields from materials through to systems are combining their skills to create new technologies.

The Yokohama Site uses systems and “Monozukuri” technologies with a focus on R&D that prioritizes “synergy”

The Yokohama Site collaborates with overseas research laboratories to add more value to social innovation businesses, which fuse social infrastructure businesses such as transport, energy, finance, public administration, etc. with information businesses such as storage systems, cloud computing, big data, etc. through research into IT and “Monozukuri” technologies. From “Monozukuri”, embedded systems and IT platform to systems and services, YRL uses its unique problem-solving capabilities and focuses its strengths on R&D that prioritizes “synergy”.
Based on our fundamental policy of creating a workplace in which junior and veteran staff can work energetically, we work in close collaboration with business departments to enable the swift linking of developed technologies to business activities.
