Hitachi implemented four types of advanced virtualization technology (storage-device virtualization, volume-capacity virtualization, storage-tier virtualization, and storage-system virtualization) to produce Hitachi’s enterprise storage products Hitachi Universal Volume Manager in 2004, Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning in 2007, Hitachi Dynamic Tiering in 2010, and Global Storage Virtualization in 2014.
Our development and implementation of the first three types of advanced virtualization technology received recognition and won the 46th Ichimura Industrial Award (Contribution Prize) #2. Furthermore, Hitachi’s volume-capacity virtualization technology (JP4369520) was honored as an outstanding invention in science and technology, and received the 2014 National Commendation for Invention from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology#3.
Our implementation of the storage virtualization technology is a result of our dedication for advanced R&D focused on storage virtualization technology, and we have filed a large number of patent applications#4.
Over a long period of R&D in storage virtualization technology, Hitachi has obtained more than 300 U.S. patents and Japanese patents. Below, we introduce the key technology in our patent portfolio for storage virtualization technology, including the technology for virtualizing storage devices, volume capacities, storage tiers, and storage system.
